Today we visited the Scholastic Book Fair. Your child
is bringing home a “wish list” that they made today. There is an order form for
you to fill out if you want to purchase anything. If you would like your child
to buy something that is on their list, we will return to the Book Fair on
Tuesday to make purchases. Please remember to add in 6% sales tax.
Reading: For the next few weeks we will be reading about
animas. Next week we will discuss the question, “How do animals survive?” We
will be reading several non-fiction selections.
Spelling: Our words next week focus on short o and long
o, with the long o sound being spelled with a silent e on the end of the word.
As usual, there are two
review words and three high-frequency words (sight words) as well. Spelling test

Welcome to the 2017-2018 School Year!
Hello! My name is Mrs. Green
and I will be your second grade teacher. I have been very busy the last few
weeks getting our classroom ready for school. We will be having an Open House
on Tuesday, August 22 from 5:00 to 7:00. I hope you can come because I am
excited to see you!
You should have received in the mail a list of supplies that
I would like you to have for second grade. I recommend that you write your name
on your supplies before you bring them to school. This year you will have your
own desk. I have a desk ready for you, so you may bring your supplies to the
Open House and put them in your desk if you have them ready.
Please bring only the
supplies listed. Our desks are not large, and there will not be room for any
other things once we get our schoolbooks in our desk. The only exception would
be pencils if you would like to bring your own. (No ink pens please!)
I would also like you to have a backpack for school as you
will have things to carry between school and home everyday.
I’m looking forward to meeting you! Get ready for a great
year of second grade! J

Second Grade News: May 22-26, 2017
Reading: This
week our weekly theme is “Our Heroes” and the essential question is “What do
heroes do?” We are studying community heroes such as police and firefighters,
and are also learning about heroes in history. Some examples of these heroes in
history are: Martin Luther King Jr., Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks, Cesar Chavez,
etc.
Spelling: We are finished with Spelling tests for the
year but are still working on the phonics skills and words in class. You may
also work on them at home even though they will not be tested.
High Frequency Words (sight words): By
the end of the unit, your child should be able to read these words quickly

Today was our last day of Library. If your child still
has library books at home, please send them in tomorrow.
This Friday is Fun to be Fit. You are invited to walk
(or run) the track with us at 1:30. Please make sure your child is dressed
appropriately and has shoes that are good for running. Although they may bring
a water bottle (plain water only), we will keep them in the classroom for
afterwards since the event is only a half hour long.
