Second Grade News: January 30-February 6, 2017

Reading: This week our weekly concept is “Ways People Help” and our essential question is “How can people help out their community?” We will explore some Social Studies concepts through this unit.

Spelling:  The Spelling concept for this time is long vowel O spelled with o, oa, ow, and oe. The Spelling test will be on Monday, February 6.

Math: Today we started Unit 6 in Math. This unit will focus on number stories, making and interpreting graphs, addition, and subtraction. Please continue practicing with your child at home on counting money, telling time, and memorizing addition and subtraction facts.


Gym: Many of our students have been forgetting their gym shoes! Please make sure your child has shoes in their backpack.

Reading: This week we are studying scientific concepts involving the sky. We will be learning about the sun, moon, and stars.

Spelling:  The Spelling concept for this time is long vowel i spelled with i, y, igh, and ie. The Spelling test will be on Wednesday, January 25.

Math: We are working on mental addition and mental subtraction involving quickly adding and subtracting 10 or 100 to any given number. We will also be solving addition and subtraction story problems. We continue to work on memorizing addition and subtraction facts, focusing on speed and accuracy. We continue to review telling time to five minutes and counting money, including making change.

Reminders:

Monday is a delayed start. We have a Spelling test, and it is also Library day!

Second Grade News: January 3-9, 2017

Reading:  We are beginning a new unit entitled “Live and Learn.”  The Big Idea is “What have you learned about the world that surprises you?” This unit focuses on several scientific concepts. The first Essential Question we will be studying is “How do the Earth’s forces affect us?” with an emphasis on gravity.

Spelling:  The Spelling words for the next two weeks will highlight different long a spellings. The first week will focus on the spellings -ai in the middle of a word and -ay at the end of a word. Here are the words for the first week:

Math: We will begin timed tests focusing on speed and accuracy in addition and subtraction facts through 12. We are continuing to work on counting money. Please help your child practice counting coins at home.  In class we will review counting money, and will also begin working on figuring out how much change one gets back when making a purchase.
