Second Grade News: January 3-9, 2017
Reading: We are beginning a new unit entitled “Live and
Learn.” The Big Idea is “What have you
learned about the world that surprises you?” This unit focuses on several
scientific concepts. The first Essential Question we will be studying is “How
do the Earth’s forces affect us?” with an emphasis on gravity.
Spelling: The Spelling words for the next two weeks
will highlight different long a spellings. The first week will focus on the
spellings -ai in the middle of a word and -ay at the end of a word. Here are the
words for the first week:

High Frequency Words (sight words): By
the end of the unit, your child should be able to read these words quickly
and easily. Please post this letter in a handy spot (on the fridge,
etc.) and have your child practice reading through these words a couple of
times each day.

these words. Please use these words in conversation with your child and ask
him/her to tell you what they mean.

Math: We
will begin timed tests focusing on speed and accuracy in addition and
subtraction facts through 12. We are continuing to work on counting money.
Please help your child practice counting coins at home. In class we will review counting money, and
will also begin working on figuring out how much change one gets back when
making a purchase.
