Second Grade News: January 3-9, 2017

Reading:  We are beginning a new unit entitled “Live and Learn.”  The Big Idea is “What have you learned about the world that surprises you?” This unit focuses on several scientific concepts. The first Essential Question we will be studying is “How do the Earth’s forces affect us?” with an emphasis on gravity.

Spelling:  The Spelling words for the next two weeks will highlight different long a spellings. The first week will focus on the spellings -ai in the middle of a word and -ay at the end of a word. Here are the words for the first week:

main                  hay                    stay                    drain
grain                 tray                    clay                    scrape
strange             good                 often                             two

High Frequency Words (sight words):  By the end of the unit, your child should be able to read these words quickly and easily. Please post this letter in a handy spot (on the fridge, etc.) and have your child practice reading through these words a couple of times each day.

Vocabulary: We are learning the meaning of these words. Please use these words in conversation with your child and ask him/her to tell you what they mean.

Math: We will begin timed tests focusing on speed and accuracy in addition and subtraction facts through 12. We are continuing to work on counting money. Please help your child practice counting coins at home.  In class we will review counting money, and will also begin working on figuring out how much change one gets back when making a purchase.
